JON, UN HOMBRE IMPRESCINDIBLE (homenaje a Jon Castle) – Also in English

Nosotros NO somos recursos humanos. ¡Somos personas!”.

Me acerqué a despedirme.

Madre mía, ¡casi me desmayo!

Yo me quedé petrificada. No podía moverme.

Tribute to Jon Castle, on the 3rd anniversary of his depart

JON, AN INDISPENSABLE MAN

There are men who fight one day and they are good. There are others who fight one year and they are better. There are those who fight many years and are very good. But there are the ones who fight their whole life and those are the indispensable ones. (Bertolt Brecht)

Every time I hear the words «Human Resources» I remember Jon saying «Human Resources, Human Resources… We are NOT human resources. We are people!». How right he was indeed. In our current societies, the most important things have been stolen of their content by giving them a name that devalues them. Just as humans are not resources, neither is nature. Nature is life in animal and plant form and what we call «natural resources» are actually valuable natural assets that, like people, have been given a price tag by the market. And so it goes…

Jon was a master in the broadest sense of the word. He was a person with an unusual strength of presence and a charisma that made him a leader even if he did not seek it. A man with an eternal love for life (in all its expressions) and for the planet, for comradeship, for justice and dignity, incorruptible in his principles, always ready to risk everything to defend each and every one of these things.

Autumn of 2014, Lisbon, on the Esperanza, one of Greenpeace ships. On Saturday night, already with my coat on to go to the city, I passed by the mess (ship’s dining room) and saw Jon on the other side of the window which overlooked the galley (kitchen). I came to say goodbye. I found him with a mop in his hand and an apron on, cleaning the bulkheads (walls) and the most inaccessible corners of the galley. «Jon, what the hell are you doing?». «Well, you know, the cook has a lot of work and so I’m helping to clean up a little bit,» he replied, with his wide smile. I took off my coat and stayed a while to help him. «To be good at the top, you have to be good at the bottom, he commented while doing his task.

Yes, that was Jon, the captain of the ship. I had only met him a few days ago, roller in hand, painting the deck (the floor) of the pantry corridor. This time, he was doing the job I was supposed to do during my night watch in port. «Hey Jon, you’re taking my job! I’m going to get fired!», and we both laughed. Actually, I was taking it away from him, because Jon loved to be one of us, in pure and genuine camaraderie. «Being one of us» in the common tasks of the ship’s maintenance gave him the respect of all of us. Jon acted with heart and passion, with the conviction of doing what must be done and he managed to awaken the same in most of those around him.

Sixteen years have passed since that trip and yet I keep so many valuable memories, clear and intact.

Jon loved it when women took the helm. He used to say that we are better than men because we are guided by intuition. It happened that, on the journey between Santander and Lisbon, we had problems with the autopilot and we took turns at the helm for a couple of days. When we were approaching the mouth of the Tagus, Jon called me on the bridge. «I would like you to be at the helm on the way up the river to the city, is it ok for you?». «Yes, yes, of course.»… Of course? My God, I almost fainted! That was my second trip with Greenpeace International ships and I was still a volunteer. I held on to the little steering wheel of the Esperanza with my heart in my throat and began to follow the pilot’s orders, orders that must be repeated aloud so that he can see that you have understood him. It is very complicated to navigate a river because there are many shallows and the course of the boat is affected by the currents. I was overwhelmed by the responsibility and I had a little bit of voice. And Jon would pass in front of me, making a gesture of raising his hands with his palms upwards and saying in a low voice: «Higher! Higher!» And so we arrived in the city. I remember going down the stairs from the bridge jumping of happiness, so happy that my captain had called me and I had not failed him. So grateful for the trust he had placed in me.

At that time, the situation of tension and lack of understanding between the Greenpeace International office and the ship’s crews had driven to a deep crisis. Almost at the end of the trip, moored in the port of Rotterdam, everything was about to burst out. It was not the first time that the two ways of looking at the organization were confronted and it would not be the last. Jon was very critical of the path that Greenpeace had taken and the rest of the crew agreed with him. One night we were both in the dark, silent, looking at the lights of the city of Rotterdam from the bridge of the Esperanza. The sadness we breathed was devastating. Suddenly, Jon broke the silence with these words «What did we do wrong?»… » Where did we take the wrong path?» I went petrified. I was so overwhelmed that I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak either. Jon represented that Greenpeace that had been largely lost in the course of time, and of which only a small flame was glimpsing. That Greenpeace of the great ideals that I fell in love with as a child. Among the things I regret more in my life is the fact that I didn’t stand up and gave him a hug. I didn’t. I couldn’t move. He went to bed and I stayed up there alone, helpless. And then yes, I started to cry. I didn’t have the answer to those questions, or at least I didn’t have them then. The only thing I knew for sure was that I would always be by Jon’s side, supporting him.

That trip meant three months of sharing the journey of life with Jon. There are many memorable moments about him that have come back to me again and again. In all the trips that followed, I ended up missing him. That is why, despite the years, so many images have remained anchored in my memory. Because Jon became one of my reference points in life, a lighthouse that showed me where to sail in the waters of what is right, of what should be done, and to do it not by following an order but by conviction. That lighthouse whose light I was always looking for in the bad moments I experienced on board afterwards along the years. That lighthouse that always came with me, as a trip companion who not only gave me light but also comforted me with the feeling of not being so alone.

When the disease was already going forward inexorably, taking away his life, Jon wrote to me: «I am so lucky in life. I had sadness and depression but I have changed thanks to many wonderful people, nature and situations. Even working with refugees last year. Although I am full of experiences, everything is new every time. The terrible, yes, but still, among the truly wonderful. With life nearing its end, now all the colours are so strong and bright, as for a small child».

Thank you, thank you Jon from all the people you gave light to. Thank you on behalf of the environment and human rights activists, the refugees, the disinherited, the whales, the seas, the rivers, the land, the forests, the air… Thank you for fighting all your life for all of us, for taking care of us, for wanting the good for all. May the winds of love and peace never cease to fill the sails of your ship on your trip to the afterlife, my dear captain.
